Natural Nail Health by Kylie Clare
It’s all well and good to provide nail services within our salons - The foundation of all of these services should be to maintain and increase the health and longevity of the natural nail or nail enhancement.
Over my 27 years in the industry I’ve seen so much nail pate damage from incorrect preparation, maintenance and improper removal of nail enhancements including gel polish and dip products. So the question is, how can you maintain the heath of the natural nail?.........................it’s really quite simple:
Prepare the natural nail with respect, care and attention - avoid using electric nail files for natural nail preparation prior to nail enhancements, instead use a 180 grit buffer to gently remove the natural nail surface shine in the direction of nail growth.
Educate your clients not to pick at lifted nail enhancements or decide they can remove their own nails at home without returning to the salon.
Homecare products – recommending a good quality skin and nail treatment (cuticle oil) that the client uses 1 -2 times per day as part of their homecare routine.
Regular appointments – not only is it a smart business decision to rebook your clients as they leave the salon it is also ideal to get the client to commit to future appointments for the maintenance of their nails on a regular basis.
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the correct application and removal of all nail products.
Providing services that do not cause damage is part of our job, its paramount to maintain the health of the nail plate. Your reward will be an increase in customer loyalty. Your clients will come back to you because of the care and respect given to their nails, not to mention you will achieve better adhesion with any nail enhancement product due to the nail being healthy.
